View Northeast at Baychester & Bartow
The corner of Baychester Blvd and Bartow Ave, hard by the northbound side of the New England Thruway (I-95). Unseen behind the apartment tower are Truman High School and an adjacent elementary school, from which the little yellow schoolbus van at the corner is probably returning from. Truman is named for the late president Harry, not the movie from Jim Carrey.
Co-op City buildings were sheathed in two-tone brick. They were among the last massive housing project, from an era that witnessed tremendous construction of apartments. Expect the Mobil to trade it's Pegasus in for a Tiger when the Exxon buyout finally gets completed. The loopy twinlamp uplift masts hold precious early 70's Unidor 400's, from McGraw Edison. They were among the first HPS fixtures used in NYC and not many are left. Shot 6/98.
UPDATE 2001: Someone committed Unicide! The precious Unidor couple has finally met its end.
