McDonald Avenue at Avenue X/86th Street

north
Taken from the mezzanine of the elevated Culver line Avenue X station on May 31st, 2001. Looking north up McDonald Avenue we find a rare 1950's era curved uplift type mastarm, albeit without the brace designed to stabilize it. Most of what's left of these mastarms in NYC are missing those braces. A rarity on Avenue F that still had the brace was recently taken down for sewer construction surrounding its corner. This is an even rarer rarity in that it is on a shorty pole for nosing beneath the overhead tracks.

west
Just to the left of shorty, we look west up 86th Street, which runs east into Avenue X as it crosses McDonald. Just past the Mobil begin the Coney Island subway maintenance yards. The CITGO sign tells the tale of late spring 2001, as gas prices bang up against the $2 per gallon level.
