94th Avenue and 143rd Street - Jamaica

northeast
94th Avenue takes over from Atlantic Avenue after the former ends its long, busy run from Red Hook, Brooklyn to the Van Wyck Expressway. 94th's northern banks are dominated by the Long Island Railroad trunk line and attendant facilities. As this was shot on May 27th, 2001, construction was well underway for the Port Authority Airtrain Jamaica Terminal, to be located next to the railroad's Jamaica Station.
west
Airtrain construction dominates both sides of the 143rd Street intersection. The 143rd Street tunnel is now strangely disconnected from its ancient matching retaining walls, although it looks like it will survive the Airtrain onslaught. This neighborhood is of mixed residential and commercial nature, with most residents being Latino. A discount furniture store occupies the corner.
north
A look north through the tunnel, which leads to Archer Avenue.
