Hillside Avenue and 173rd Street - Jamaica

Eastern Jamaica around Hillside Avenue in the 160's and 170's may not qualify as poor per se, but it certainly ranks as struggling economically. The row of stores lining Hillside across the street from Major Mark Park at 173rd Street definitely reflect in a spendid microcosm, the prevailing economic realities of a gritty district. From west to east, as seen above, we have an employment agency, storefront realty and equity financing firm and a storefront church. The finance company is often the last resort for strapped homeowners in trouble.

After the church comes a thrift shop. After that, things get a little ethnic, with the Halal meat store and Chinese takeout. The Halal store caters mainly either Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, or Muslims from India, as indicated by the Indian script, as opposed to Arabic.
