Hillside Avenue and Homelawn Street - Jamaica
Photo Gallery: Sidestreet Scenes

Above and below, the view down hill to Hillside Avenue from Homelawn Street. At least one thoroughfare that was named what it was for a good reason, throughout its western route, Hillside is indeed located along a significantly steep hill side. Homelawn runs up into Utopia Parkway, which is not a real parkway, and takes over at the Grand Central Parkway, which is a real parkway. The stores ion the right below are on 169th Street, which southbound Homelawn is about to disappear into. 169th was once the Jamaica subway terminal, before the 179th Street station opened in 1950.

east
The view eastward down Hillside. The corner drugstore is certainly a classic of 1940's Art Deco facade design. The clock may have been working, but it was off, as it was around 5:30PM when I shot this. The new digital walk signal glows at the corner. The neighboring store displays Fall 2001's most omnipresent icon, our American Flag.
north
Looking north. Yes, it seems it's been a long day for this fella. The apartment house in the center sandwiched between 169th Street and Homelawn has some strange apparatus attached to its roofline on three sides. I couldn't figure it out, but they resemble cell phone transmitters. In these wary post-WTC days, I can't help be suspicious. More on them on another page, as they are a story unto themselves. All shots taken 10/13/2001.
