Liberty Avenue & 126th Street - Ozone Park/Richmond Hill

Except for 133rd Street to the east, this is the only other Liberty Avenue corner east of the elevated terminus at Lefferts Boulevard, still sporting the two headed traffic light scheme. We're looking west down the main drag borderline of Richmond Hill to the right and Ozone Park to the left. Actually, I've no real idea where one begins and the other ends. Their north-south border is rather fluid and is further north by Woodhaven Boulevard a couple of miles westward. This section of Liberty is a lively affair, with businesses catering to a heavily Guyanese population, most of whom are of Indo-Pakistani descent.

These double headed traffic are not that much older than most of the standard triple headers that have gradually replaced them at other intersections. The two at this corner are of 1960's vintage, having probably replaced castiron box signals that were knocked down. Why they remain is a mystery to me. I suppose it has something to do with the underground wiring. Either that, or the neighborhood loves them too much to part with them. Since most of the neighborhood lived in Guyana when triple headers first began to knock the old double boxlight signals out, I doubt that community nostalgia accounts for these survivors.
