Looking south down Springfield Boulevard at 137th Avenue. The LIRR's Far Rockaway branch crosses over the boulevard a block away. This section of Springfield had alot of construction activity when these were taken in July 2000. Still plenty of construction further to the south as of this writing over a year later. I believe the roadwork is related to huge storm drainage projects ongoing in these southeastern Queens neighborhoods for several years.

At the corner is the First Presbyterian Church od Springfield Gardens, certainly one of the oldest active houses of worship within New York City, or at least in the outer boroughs.

These struggling neighborhoods would be much better served if underused spur commuter lines such as this were linked to the city subway system, to provide reasonable rapid transit into the downtown business districts. Its bad enough that in the act of rushing better heeled suburbanites past surrounding homes and yards, these ugly ROWs effectively isolate long stretches of blocks from one another, provide hiding places and graffiti heaven for gang bangers, and just overall detrimentally affect the surrounding quality of life.
