north
It was pretty late at night and most folks were already in bed, but the Fruit Farm is open, which is not unusual for many corner produce stores, which found a lucrative, if occasionally dangerous niche as off hour convenience stores. The shuttered Alexanders store remained lit up, awaiting a lease deal or sale to another department store chain. Eventually, another regional discounter, Caldors, would move to take it over, but went bankrupt itself before completing the project. Finally, Sears stepped in and remodelled the entire block into a mall. The ill fortunes of its two predecessors did not entirely escape Sears, however. A year after opening, its parking garage suffered a partial collapse.
south
Looking south between Saunders in back of me, and Booth ahead. Some stores have changed since, but Met is still there, albeit with a new sign and logo.
