We're on Broadway, at 230st Street in Marble Hill, The Bronx. While brand new retro bishop crook poles are all over the city nowadays, surviving originals are quite rare, expecially in The Bronx. Rarer still are those still retaining incandescent luminaires, like this Westinghouse AK10 "cuplight" with the longer bullethead refractor, used for higher wattage bulbs. The gaslight style luminaires gracing this stretch are also part of the retro craze that envelopes many shopping and tourist districts. Many of the city's retros are financed by private neighborhood or business organizations. The elevated carries the IRT #1 & 9 Broadway locals up to 242nd St. Shot 10/98. |
