Grand Central Service Road Traffic Light

fluted pole This traffic light sits atop a fluted base pole. These were the first generation of post-cast iron poles, that popped up in the early 60's. They were supplanted, by the late 60's, in favor of t-based poles and overhead light masts. Often in precarious positions, at busy corners, I consider the fluted poles to now be an endangered species. This one holds court at 164th and the GCP.
