I shot this sign
just days before Jackie Robinson's name was superimposed over
"Interboro", in May 1997, at the Cypress Hills overpass
in Ridgewood. The sign hangs on double mast arms attached to
a single pole. Setups of this type replaced the Whitestone style
highway signs, along the sides of NYC highways in the early 60's.By the late 60's, these were in turn, getting the shaft, in favor of massive multi-trussed signposts that often spanned across both directions of the highway. This style signpost is now mostly relegated to sidestreets like this, at major intersections with highways, or narrow parkways like the Robinson, which have little stretching-out room for the space-hungry truss-posts. The old rusting cuplight stands loyally by it's sign friend. My Grand Marquis can be seen behind the sign in the southbound view. |
