A closeup of the old black on white directional overhead
sign, at the corner of Douglaston Pkwy and West Alley Road, leading
to the Long Island Expwy a couple of blocks away.
This style directional was de riguer on NYC's highways, from the
'40's through the '50's. Only a scant few still survive, mostly
on sidestreets feeding into a highway, like in this case. The
rest were either consumed by 18 wheelers, or by the massive green
overheads and their more massive trussed supports.
In contrast to the fluorescent, mercury & halide lamps illuminating
the green monsters, quaint incandescent "reading" lamps
light this sign up.
