Little shield
and circle shaped signs like this are scattered all over highways
and main streets, pointing the way to various bridges and tunnels
in NYC. Each crossing's sign is distinctive. All are endangered
species, but clusters remain of some of them, like the shields
pointing towards the Throgs Neck Bridge, alongside the Clearview
Expwy in Bayside. |
This one sits
in the bridges shadows, at the Willets Point Blvd. entrance to
the southbound Clearview. Ironically, those in the very shadow
of the great suspension bridge, were forced to backtrack south
to the next Clearview exit and turn back north, in order to get
on the span. This shield still has it's orange-lined rim, unlike another Throgs Shield, from the 73rd Avenue entrance to the Clearview, that is alot more weatherbeaten. It jealously shares it's pole with two other signs, designating the CV as a snow route and as off limits to tow trucks without a sweet deal from the city. Thankfully, the more interesting bridge sign has been spared the depravations of the graffiti vandals and sticker crazed campaigners, who are far more able to reach the two lower signs. I believe this sign was originally rimmed in blue. I think they're cute signs, but in all truth, they are rather inefficient landmarks. Still, in their own little way, they give a bit of personality to their surroundings. |
