Grand Central Parkway West Jewel Avenue 69th Avenue

Grand Central Parkway West Jewel Avenue 69th Avenue Image 0View of the classic stone faced, elliptical arched overpasses designed for many New York City area parkways. The two right side arches, carrying Jewel and 69th Avenues, are actually not originals. They were put up during the widening of the old Grand Central Parkway that took place from the late 1950s through the early 1960s. You can see the seam where the Jewel Avenue arch was connected to the original arches.
Grand Central Parkway West Jewel Avenue 69th Avenue Image 1The original elliptical arches shunt the main east-west lanes of the Grand Central Parkway, while the newer arches on the right are for the off ramp lanes. I'm not certain of this, but one of the bigger arches may also have been a product of the widening. I'm sure the original 1930s vintage parkway passed under a single arch and probably didn't even have a center divider.
