Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Brooklyn Heights Cantelever North
The famed Brooklyn Queens Expressway cantilevered section running along the edge of Brooklyn Heights begin, northbound, just past the entrance ramp from Atlantic Avenue. This triple tier highway section was completed in 1954 and originally sported Whitestone style luminaire mast arms attached to the walls, plus Westinghouse "cuplight" fixtures embedded in the ceilings.
The lower tier holds the southbound lanes. The middle tier you see approaching here, carrying the northbound traffic.
The top tier holds the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Rich folk wanted that area reserved for private gardens, I assume similar to Grammercy Park, but notoriously obstinate and irascible Robert Moses, who led the building of the highway, was infamous for not liking being told what to do by anyone, rich or poor. Hence, he made it a public park and overlook.
These views are all from January 1999.
