BQE I-278 From Woodside Avenue to 69th Street Queens

BQE I-278 From Woodside Avenue to 69th Street Queens Image 0Overpasses in this densely bridged section of the I-278 Brooklyn Queens Expressway (AKA the BQE) operate on the buddy system. Queens Blvd and 65th Place just south of here hold hands, as do 41st Avenue and 70th Street just to the north. The third couple of Woodside lovebird bridges are Woodside Avenue, which I shot this from and 69th Street which you are looking at. The 69th Street span is a strange looking affair as detailed on its own page. It was the only one in this group with a total concrete facade, a situation that regretably changed with the massive reconstruction that began a year after I shot this. It also sported unusual art-deco-like turrets bookending the railing and in an even weirder twist was not a straight span. 69th Street comes towards Woodside Avenue on a slant, parallel to 70th Street. The southern facade of the overpass, however, is parallel with Woodside and sports a little garden in the triangle between it's railing and 69th. As of 2017, the strange alignment and the garden space still exist, although the gardens are now fenced off against the public. This was shot in June 1998.
