Side streets represent the 99% in the roadway nation, the vast majority of byways, where the vaster majority of city dwellers actually live. In New York City, side streets are usually designated Street, Place, Court or Lane, as opposed to main drags designated Avenue or Drive, and secondary roads more often designated Boulevard. Less busy routes parallel to Avenues may be designated Road. Many Avenue class roads are only slightly busier than side streets crossing them.
