The fabled Long Island Expressway extends east from the Queens Midtown Tunnel through New York City outer borough Queens across Long Island counties Nassau and Suffolk to Riverhead, just west of the twin forks split leading to Montauk and the Hamptons. The LIE's initials prove the lie that it is an Express anything, at least in rush hour. It was built in stages from the late 1930s, when its original western reaches served as the tunnel's arterial access road, through to 1970.
